Spring Field Trip to UT Austin

Spring Field Trip to UT Austin

Every year, Mr. V and I take a group of Latin students on a field trip to an art museum to look at Classical art pieces and enjoy some lunch together. It is a intellectually stimulating day of cultural enrichment and camaraderie that we look forward to every spring. For many years, we visited the San Antonio Museum of Art, but in 2019, we visited the Blanton Art Museum and the Ransom Center - a facility that collects culturally and historically significant artifacts - both located on the campus of UT Austin. We had originally planned to alternate trips to SAMA and Austin going forward, but COVID got in the way...until now.

For our trip this spring, on Saturday, April 27, 2024 (8:30-6:30), we will hop on a school bus and return to UT Austin. We will spend the day looking at great Classical art at the Blanton and examining special pieces (like an edition of Vergil's poetry from the 1200s) from the Ransom Center. We'll also have lunch on the "Drag" (Guadalupe St.) and have an informal walking tour of the UT campus. If you go, you'll need to bring $5.00 for museum admission and some money for lunch.

This trip is open to all HCHS Latin students, not just club members. However, because of the limitations of group size, we can take no more than 32 students on this trip. If you want to go on this field trip, here's what you need to do:

1. A sign up sheet will be available in the Latin room (218) starting this Friday, April 12, in the morning.

2. Sign up on the sheet to get a permission form. You CANNOT sign up other people, just yourself.

3. The first 32 students to turn in their completed, signed permission form starting the following Monday, April 15, will secure a spot on the trip. You cannot turn it in earlier than Monday.

N.B. If you turn in your form after 32 submissions have been reached, you will be added to a waitlist.

Please let me know if you have any questions. We hope you can join us!

Latin State Convention

Latin State Convention

Next up is State Convention, which will be in Austin on April 5-6. As previously explained, all students are eligible to attend State, but what contests they can participate in partly depend on how they placed at Area. The cost is also going to be much higher because of hotel rooms, meals, and registration for a 2-day convention. But we are also planning a visit to Zilker Park, a tour of the UT campus and the Blanton Art Museum, and hopefully more. State Convention is always an incredible time for students, so we hope you can all send your children with us. Much more information, details, and deadlines to come very soon! Parents, if you are interested in volunteering as chaperones for state, we will need several, so look out for a call for volunteers to come soon as well!

Our Latin Club meeting on Wednesday, January 31 will be an extended meeting until 7:30 PM known as "Crunch Time," where students do a bunch of major preparation for Area, but we also have fun things going on a like a "crassus lepidus" contests (which involves stuffing marshmallows in your mouth and trying to say "crassus lepidus"). It's always a good, enriching time for students.

Induction 2023

The Health Careers High School Latin Club cordially invites you to attend the annual Latin Club Induction Ceremony on Friday, October 20th, 2023 at 6:30 PM in the Health Careers High School cafeteria. It is very important that students arrive no later than 6:00 PM to receive instructions in the Library. Musical entertainment will be provided for all guests in the cafeteria preceding the start of the induction.

This ceremony is a gathering to celebrate the past, present, and future of this amazing organization and the individuals that bind it together. These students share a passion for the Classical roots that have so influenced the modern world. The event will include speeches from students about their experiences with a Latin education, dramatic interpretations of historical and mythological characters from Latin passages, a keynote speaker from the past, a multimedia presentation featuring past and present events of the club, and fire.

As the Latin Club embarks upon another year, we hope to experience as much success, knowledge, support, community, and fun as possible. Already this early in the school year, the incoming Latin I students are showing great interest and outstanding potential, while experienced members in Levels II, III, and IV are serving as leaders to guide and bring out the best in each new member. We would be honored to have you and your family attend this wonderful evening of celebration! We hope you’ll be able to join us for this very special occasion.
